Following positive feedback from our social media community here is a collection of TankBlanket’s  ‘Interesting facts’ about ice, frost and wintery weather!

  • Water in its liquid form is less dense than ice! 
  • Water covers 71% of the earth’s surface!
  • 1.7% of the planets water is in glaciers and ice caps!
  • 1.7% of the earth’s water is in groundwater!
  • 0.001% of our water is in air vapour, clouds and precipitation!

  • 96.5% of the planets water is in the sea & oceans!
  • Only 2.5% of the earth’s water is fresh!
  • Less than 0.3% of the earth’s water is in rivers, lakes and the atmosphere!
  • Only 2.5% of the Earth’s water is freshwater and 98.8% of that is in Ice and groundwater!
  • Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes and the atmosphere!

  • Ice covers 10% of the Earth’s land mass!
  • Ice forms 7% of the Oceans!
  • Trapped air bubbles make Ice seem cloudy!
  • Water expands as it freezes and freezes from the outside in!
  • Hot water freezes faster than cold water. We still don’t know why!
  • Water does not always freeze at 0°C. It needs something for its molecules to latch onto. Ice crystals form around a nucleus such as dust. If these are not present then water can be frozen at -42 °C!
  • Icebergs are born on land!
  • When a piece of Ice breaks off a glacier it is called calving! And depending on its size it could be a growler, bergy bit or iceberg!
  • You can start a fire with ice! How? Carve a piece into the shape of a lens so it acts as a magnifying glass and concentrate the sunlight on a single point!
  •  A frost day is a period of 24 hours in which the minimum temperature is equal to or below 0°C!
  • If the temperature remains below 0°C all day it is known as an Ice day!
  •  The average number of Ice days per winter for much of England and Wales is 1 to 5, while Scotland records 2 to 6!
  • The winter of 1962-63 recorded 17 Ice days!
  • Air below 0°C is defined as Air Frost, measured at a height of 5 cm above ground!
  • Hoar Frost, the fluffy deposit of minute ice crystals on grass and brickwork, occurs on calm clear nights when condensation takes place after freezing!
  •  Black Frost is a thin sheet of frost without the white colour usually associated with frost!
  • 1620-21: Frost Fair held on the Thames which was completely frozen!
  • 1644: Late January snowfall lasted 8 days!
  • 1657-58: Snow remained on the ground from December through to March!
  • 1674: March snowfall lasted for 13 days!
  • 1742 Ice blocks are in the Thames!
  • 1930-31: February saw 2 feet of snow fall in northern England and Scotland!
